A free stopovers can turn one international flight into two travel experiences without necessarily adding another airfare to your itinerary. At TravelLolo, we think the real opportunity is understanding exactly what an airline means by a ” free stopovers “. Some programs waive additional airfare for a city stay, while others provide complimentary hotels, meals, transfers, or other benefits when your connection meets specific conditions.

For this guide, we reviewed current airline free stopovers and transit programs published by the airlines themselves. Our research was conducted in September 2026. We have focused on what each program actually provides, how you can qualify, and what you need to check before building a free stopovers into your ticket.

What is a Free Airline Stopovers?

A free stopovers are more than a long connection. A connection normally involves changing flights while continuing your journey. A free stopovers deliberately gives you enough time to leave the airport and spend time in the connecting city before continuing to your final destination.

The important distinction is that “free” can mean different things.

An airline may allow you to add several days in its hub without charging additional airfare. Another may provide a complimentary hotel because your connection meets specific requirements. A third may offer a free city tour while the hotel remains your responsibility.

That is why we recommend checking exactly what is included before assuming you have found a completely free vacation extension.

    1. Icelandair

Icelandair has one of the clearest examples of an airfare-based free stopovers. Eligible passengers traveling across the Atlantic can add a stop in Iceland without paying additional airfare for the stopover.

The airline currently allows travelers to stay for up to seven nights on qualifying itineraries. The important point is that the airfare does not increase simply because you add the Iceland stop. Hotel and other expenses remain your responsibility.

That makes Icelandair particularly interesting if you are already traveling between North America and Europe. Instead of treating Iceland as an airport connection, you can deliberately build several days into the itinerary.

    How to use it

When booking an eligible transatlantic itinerary, add the Iceland free stopovers during the booking process. Then calculate the additional hotel, transportation, food, and sightseeing costs.

The flight component may be free, but the stopover itself is not necessarily cost-free.

    2. TAP Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal’s Portugal free Stopovers program lets eligible passengers add a stop in Lisbon or Porto without an additional airfare charge.

The current program allows a stopover of up to 10 days on the inbound or outbound portion of the journey. TAP also offers discounts and special deals with participating hotels, restaurants, attractions, and other partners.

This is an important distinction. The free part is the additional stopover in the ticket. The partner offers can then reduce some of the cost of staying in Portugal.

    How to use it

Select the free stopovers option when booking an eligible TAP itinerary. You can choose Lisbon or Porto and then use the program’s partner offers to reduce some expenses during your stay.

If you want to see another part of Portugal, TAP also advertises a 25% discount on eligible domestic flights within Portugal when booked through its stopover program.

That can make the stopover more useful than simply spending one night near the airport.

    3. Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines approaches free stopovers differently because its program can provide complimentary accommodation for eligible international connections through Istanbul.

The current rules state that Economy Class passengers can qualify when the layover exceeds 12 hours and Business Class passengers when it exceeds nine hours, provided a shorter connection is not available for the route. The service applies to eligible passengers traveling on the same confirmed ticket.

The airline also offers Touristanbul for eligible passengers with connections between six and 24 hours. That creates two different opportunities.

You can have a complimentary hotel when your connection meets the accommodation rules, or you may be able to experience Istanbul during a shorter connection through the complimentary tour.

    How to use it

Do not deliberately choose a longer connection simply to obtain a hotel without checking the eligibility conditions.

Turkish Airlines specifically ties the accommodation benefit to the availability of shorter connection options. Check your itinerary against the current hotel service rules before assuming you qualify.

    4. Etihad Airways

Etihad’s Abu Dhabi free Stopovers program provides an especially useful benefit for travelers whose itinerary already connects through Abu Dhabi.

Eligible return-flight passengers with qualifying connections can receive a complimentary one- or two-night hotel stay in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain. The current program states that the connection must be at least 24 hours and up to four days.

Etihad’s current stopover page also says eligible travelers can choose from selected hotels and receive a complimentary free Stopovers Pass offering discounts on attractions and tours. That means the benefit extends beyond simply getting a bed for the night.

    How to use it

Build the Abu Dhabi free stopovers into an eligible Etihad return itinerary. When booking, enter the stopover duration and choose an eligible hotel.

If you have already booked separately, Etihad says you should contact the airline at least three days before the flight to arrange the hotel. Travel agent bookings have different eligibility conditions.

Visa requirements are also your responsibility, so check UAE entry rules before booking.

    5. Emirates

Emirates has a different kind of complimentary accommodation program called Dubai Connect. It is designed for certain passengers who have a long connection in Dubai because a better connection is not available for their itinerary.

Eligible passengers may receive complimentary hotel accommodation, meals, airport transfers, and a UAE visa where applicable. Emirates says the service should be booked at least 12 hours before the incoming flight to Dubai, although its terms also specify a longer advance requirement in some circumstances.

This is not the same as deliberately adding several days in Dubai to your ticket. Dubai Connect is primarily a service for qualifying long connections rather than a general free holiday extension.

    How to use it

Book your Emirates itinerary and check your eligibility through Manage Your Booking. Emirates will indicate whether Dubai Connect is available for your itinerary. If you qualify, use the service rather than paying for a hotel yourself.

If you deliberately choose a longer connection when a better connection is available, you may not qualify.

    6. Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines provides a particularly interesting stopover benefit for passengers connecting through Addis Ababa.

Eligible passengers with an eight-to-24-hour connection on a qualifying single ticket can receive a complimentary hotel stay, meals, and airport transfers. The airline says Ethiopian Airlines must operate both the inbound and outbound flights through Addis Ababa for the free package.

This is a good example of why you need to read the eligibility rules rather than simply search for an airline with a “free stopovers.” The connection window matters. The ticket structure matters. The operating carrier matters.

    How to use it

Check whether your itinerary creates an eight-to-24-hour connection in Addis Ababa. Eligible passengers normally receive the hotel voucher at their origin station or through the transit desk in Addis Ababa.

If you want to leave the airport, check the applicable visa requirements for your nationality.

    7. Gulf Air

Gulf Air offers complimentary stopover accommodation for certain passengers connecting through Bahrain.

The airline’s current rules state that Economy passengers can qualify for complimentary accommodation when their transit exceeds seven hours but remains under 24 hours. Falcon Gold passengers can qualify with a transit exceeding six hours and under 24 hours, subject to the program’s other requirements.

    There is an important catch.

Eligibility depends partly on the value of the ticket and whether the itinerary meets the airline’s conditions.

Gulf Air also offers separate Bahrain free stopovers packages, which are not necessarily free.

    How to use it

Check the value and structure of your Gulf Air ticket before assuming you qualify for the complimentary hotel. The airline says the flights must meet specific operating and ticket requirements.

You should also check Bahrain’s entry requirements before planning to leave the airport.

    8. Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines provides a different kind of free stopovers opportunity through its KrisFlyer award rules.

Eligible award tickets can include complimentary stopovers under specified redemption types. Current KrisFlyer terms allow one stopover on certain one-way and round-trip awards, with additional stopover allowances for some round-trip awards.

This is particularly interesting if you already have KrisFlyer miles.

You are not necessarily receiving a free hotel. You are using the award ticket structure to add a free stopovers without paying an additional airfare for that stopover under the applicable award rules.

Singapore Airlines also has a Singapore free Stopovers program that provides benefits such as Changi Transit e-Vouchers for eligible travelers from certain countries, including India, when the qualifying itinerary is booked through the airline’s stopover process.

    How to use it

If you are redeeming KrisFlyer miles, check the stopover rules for the exact award type before booking.

If you are paying for a ticket, check Singapore Airlines’ current stopover benefits separately.

The two programs should not be treated as identical.

    9. Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways is worth including, but there is an important qualification. Its current Qatar free Stopovers program is not a completely free hotel program. Instead, eligible passengers with a Doha transit between 12 and 96 hours can access stopover packages starting from US$14 per person. Packages can include hotel stays for up to four nights and additional experiences.

Why include it in a guide about free stopovers? Because it illustrates an important point about airline stopover programs. A stopover can be free in terms of additional airfare, while the hotel component is paid.

If your itinerary already passes through Doha, a low-cost stopover package can sometimes be a practical way to turn a connection into a short city visit.

    How to use it

Check your itinerary against Qatar Airways‘ 12-to-96-hour transit requirement. Then compare the cost of the stopover package with booking a hotel independently.

Do not describe the hotel as free when the current program charges for the package.

    10. LOT Polish Airlines

LOT Polish Airlines offers a free stopover program that lets eligible passengers spend one to eight days in Warsaw during their journey.

The current program includes partner discounts, including selected hotel offers, discounts on domestic flights within Poland, and other travel-related benefits.

This is another example where “free stopovers” needs careful interpretation. LOT’s program allows you to build Warsaw into your itinerary without treating the city as merely a connection, but its accommodation is primarily offered through discounts rather than a universally free hotel.

    How to use it

Add the LOT Stopover option to an eligible itinerary and review the partner offers provided with your confirmation.

If you need accommodation, compare the discounted partner rate with other hotels before booking.

The stopover can be particularly useful if Warsaw is somewhere you would like to visit anyway.

    Free Stopover vs Free Hotel

This distinction is worth remembering because it can completely change the economics of your trip.

Type of benefitWhat you may receive
Free airfare stopoverExtra days in the hub without additional airfare
Complimentary hotelHotel provided when your connection meets specific rules
Complimentary mealsFood provided during a qualifying transit
Free city tourGuided sightseeing during an eligible connection
Discounted stopoverHotel or activities offered below normal rates
Paid stopover packageA separate package added to your itinerary

You should never assume that “free stopover” means your entire stay costs nothing. The airfare, hotel, visa, transportation, meals, and attractions can all have different rules.

How to Book a Free Stopovers

If you want to use one of these programs, we recommend following this process.

    1. Start with the airline’s eligible route

You cannot add a stopover simply because an airline flies through a city.

    2. Check the exact stopover rules

Look at the permitted duration, fare type, ticket structure, and connection requirements.

    3. Book the itinerary correctly

Some programs require you to select the stopover during the initial booking process.

    4. Confirm the benefit

Do not assume the hotel or other benefit has been added automatically.

    5. Check visa requirements

A free hotel does not automatically give you permission to enter the country.

    6. Calculate the full trip cost

Include accommodation, transport, food, visa charges, and activities that are not covered. That final step is where a supposedly free stopover can reveal its real cost.

How to Make a Stopover Actually Worthwhile

We would not add a stopover simply because an airline offers one. The connecting city should make sense for your trip.

If adding three days in Lisbon saves you nothing on airfare but gives you a destination you already wanted to visit, the stopover can add genuine value.

If the stopover requires an expensive visa, additional hotel nights, and complicated ground transportation, the “free” airfare may not make the overall trip cheaper.

The best use of a stopover is often to replace a destination you were already planning to visit.

That turns an unavoidable connection into an additional part of your itinerary.

How TravelLolo Fits into Stopover Planning

At TravelLolo, we approach free stopovers as part of airfare research rather than as an automatic bargain.

Our Travel Lolo flight deals research looks at the airline, itinerary, cabin, schedule, and fare conditions. A stopover then becomes another factor in deciding whether an itinerary represents good value.

We recommend comparing the complete itinerary before choosing a stopover. Look at the airfare. Then look at the hotel cost. Then consider the visa and transportation requirements. Finally, ask whether you actually want to spend time in the connecting city.

That approach makes Travel Lolo cheap flights more useful as part of a broader trip calculation rather than simply a search for the lowest airfare.

Five Questions to Ask Before Booking

Before adding a stopover, we would ask:

    1. Is the stopover actually free, or is only the additional airfare free?
    2. Does the airline provide a hotel?
    3. Does my exact fare qualify?
    4. Do I need a visa to enter the country?
    5. Will the complete trip cost less than a normal itinerary?

These five questions can save you from misunderstanding an attractive airline offer.

    Turn One Journey into Two

A stopover can be one of the more useful ways to get additional value from an international itinerary. The trick is not to search for the word “free.” It is to understand what the airline is actually giving you.

At TravelLolo, we recommend looking at the complete economics before deciding. If the free stopovers gives you a destination you already wanted to visit, it can turn a necessary connection into an extra part of your trip. That is when Travel Lolo free stopovers flights can become more than an airfare strategy. They can help you rethink how you use the journey itself.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is a free airline stopover?

A free airline stopover usually means an airline allows you to spend additional time in its connecting city without charging extra airfare for the stopover. Hotel, food, transportation, and visa costs may still apply.

    Which airlines offer free stopovers?

Airlines with current stopover or complimentary transit programs include Icelandair, TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines, Etihad Airways, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Gulf Air, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, and LOT Polish Airlines. The benefits and eligibility rules differ substantially between programs.

How do free stopover flights work?

The airline builds the stopover into an eligible itinerary. Depending on the program, you may receive extra days in the connecting city without additional airfare, a complimentary hotel, meals, transfers, or other benefits.

How to book a free stopover?

Choose an airline with an applicable stopover program, verify that your route and fare qualify, and add the stopover through the airline’s booking process when required. Then confirm the hotel or other benefits separately.

    Are airline stopovers really free?

Sometimes, but “free” usually refers to a specific benefit rather than your entire stay. An airline may waive additional airfare while you still pay for hotels, meals, visas, transportation, or activities. Always check the current terms before booking.
